Newark Liberty International Airport is one of the main airports included in the New York metropolitan area. The airport is located in New Jersey between the two cities Newark and Elizabeth. More specifically, Newark Airport is positioned 9 miles/14 km southwest of Manhattan and only 3 miles/4.8 km south of Downtown Newark. Because of the shared location between the two cities, Newark and Elizabeth, the airport is owned by both cities. However, the airport is leased and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In 2017, Newark Airport was the 60th busiest airport in the United States based on international passenger traffic. In addition, it was the 15th busiest airport in the country that same year. In 2018, the airport served 46,065,175 passengers, which is the highest number in the airport’s history.

At Newark Liberty International Airport, which covers 2,027 acres/820 ha, you will find three runways plus one helipad. Inside Newark Airport, there are three passenger terminals, which are terminal A, B, and C. Terminal A only handles domestic flights and Canadian flights, while Terminal B mainly handles foreign carriers, however, it also serves flights to the Caribbean. Finally, Terminal C is exclusively for United Airlines.

The airport has a total of 121 gates distributed across the three passenger terminals. Terminal A serves 29 gates, Terminal B has 24 gates, and finally, Terminal C includes 68 gates.

Newark Liberty International Airport collaborates with over 50 different carriers. United Airlines is by far the airport’s biggest tenant as it serves 68% of all passengers at the airport, and operates in all three of the terminals at Newark airport. Newark’s second-largest carrier is FedEx Express. AirTrain Newark is connecting the three terminals at Newark Liberty International Airport. Furthermore, this 3 mile/4.8 km monorail system connects Newark Liberty International Airport Station to the closest cities, with transfers to Amtrak and regional rail hubs such as Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction, and New York Penn Station.

You will also find NJ Transit buses that provide service to Irvington, Downtown Newark, and Newark Penn Station. From here, connections are available to the PATH and NJ Transit rail lines. Another option is to take the Express Bus that runs between Newark Liberty International Airport and New York City from 4 am to 1 am every day of the year. Each bus stops at all three New York stops.

The taxis serving the airport charge a flat rate based on your desired destination. Please also be aware that during rush hours there is an additional $5 surcharge to all locations in the State of New York, except Staten Island. The weekday rush hours are from 6 am to 9 am in the mornings, and again from 4 pm to 7 pm in the afternoon. On weekends, the rush hours are from 12 pm to 8 pm, Saturday and Sunday.

If you are on a connecting flight, you will have to enter the United States and smoke outside one of the terminals. Afterward, you have to go through Security again for your connection flight.
